Spinifex Esprit 2020

Spinifex Esprit is a Barossa red blend led by Mataro, built around perfume and savoury structure.

Eight very old vineyards, mostly at Ebenezer, Williamstown and Bethany, supply the fruit, with vine ages between 75 and more than 150 years, all dry-grown and farmed with almost nothing added. Yields in 2020 were tiny and the blend swung hard away from the previous year's Grenache dominance: 67 per cent Mataro, 27 per cent Grenache, 6 per cent Cinsault. Each parcel fermented on wild yeast with macerations from eight to twenty days, only the Grenache as whole clusters, then aged in well-seasoned 600- and 1,200-litre barrels and stainless steel. This was one of the wines that reset expectations for the Barossa in the early 2000s.

Light-footed and savoury, with red cherry, dried herbs, pepper and an earthy finish on fine, sinewy tannin. Serve at 16 degrees, or cool it slightly. It suits roast pork, duck ragu, or a plate of cured meats and olives.
