Spinifex Esprit 2022

Spinifex Esprit is a Grenache-dominant Barossa blend from eight very old dry-grown vineyards.

Grenache takes 86 per cent of the 2022, with Shiraz, Mataro and Cinsault filling the remainder in small measures. The season ran mild and long, cooler than the Barossa average by Pete Schell's reckoning, and that combination of moderate conditions and heavy Grenache has given the wine an unusually fresh, pure feel. Fruit came from the usual sources around Ebenezer, Williamstown and Bethany, vines aged between 75 and over 150 years. Each parcel fermented on indigenous yeast, macerations ran from eight to twenty days, the Grenache went in whole-bunch, and ageing took place in seasoned large-format oak and steel.

Deft and lithe, with cranberry, red plum, white pepper and a savoury, mineral finish on light tannin. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, slightly cool. It is a genuine bistro red: roast chicken, sausages and lentils, or a mushroom tart.
