Spinifex Garçon 2022

Spinifex Garcon is a fresh-styled Barossa Grenache built from four old-vine, dry-grown parcels.

Vines here range from 35 to 100 years old, and the object is freshness before power, with the generosity of the Barossa held in reserve. Forty per cent whole bunches went into the 2022, fermented across stainless steel and concrete, with slow natural ferments, gentle pump-overs and foot-stomping doing the work. Maturation was on light lees, split between steel vats, seasoned thick-staved 600-litre demi-muids and a 2,500-litre foudre, and the wine went into bottle unfined and unfiltered eight months after harvest. That Pete Schell manages this quality at the price remains a small mystery.

Energetic and lively, with summer berry fruit, earthy spice and sweet blue florals, lifted by fresh acidity and a gentle grip of tannin. Serve at 15 degrees. Try it with grilled lamb, a herby roast chicken, or pasta with sausage and fennel.
