Spinifex La Cigale 2021

Spinifex La Cigale is a Mataro-led Barossa blend with Cinsault, Grenache and Shiraz.

It arrived as a stand-in the year the Garcon was not made, and turned into something worth keeping. The 2021 runs 37 per cent Mataro, 31 Cinsault, 20 Grenache and 12 Shiraz: Cinsault from an old Bethany block of 40- to 50-year-old vines, Mataro from two Ebenezer sites in the north, Shiraz from Altona in the south on deep gravelly sand, Grenache from the usual old dry-grown sources in coarse Barossa sand. Whole bunches, whole berries and destemmed fruit all featured, ferments were mostly natural across steel, concrete and large seasoned oak, and the wine spent about five months on fine lees.

Intense and aromatically lifted, with juicy red and blue fruit against earthy, savoury notes, clean acidity and powdery, sinewy tannin. Cinsault does most of the talking. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees with roast chicken, sausages, or a vegetable tagine.
