Spinifex La Maline 2021

Spinifex La Maline is a Shiraz from two neighbouring high-altitude vineyards in the High Eden.

Both sites sit at 490 metres on skeletal, sandy, granitic soil, dry-grown, one of them Pete and Magali Schell's own Rostein vineyard at seventy years old and the other, directly adjacent, at twenty. This is the label's most finely structured Shiraz by design, and the winemaking stays out of the way: hand-picked fruit, wild ferments in open oak and steel over twelve to twenty-one days, whole bunches between 30 and 45 per cent, and two per cent pressed Viognier marc stirred into the must. Twenty months on light lees in French barriques and demi-muids, roughly 40 per cent new, precede blending.

Highly perfumed and savoury, high in octane yet lithe, with svelte texture, stylish power and a long, layered close. Decant and serve at 17 degrees. Roast lamb with rosemary, venison, or a dish of eggplant and harissa.
