Spinifex Moppa Grenache 2020

Spinifex Moppa Grenache is a single-vineyard Barossa Grenache from the estate's long-standing Moppa site.

Grenache has come off this vineyard since 2005, though Pete Schell has bottled it on its own only three times, and 2020 was a difficult year to do it: frosts, then cold and wind at flowering, then a hot, dry, early vintage that dropped yields to just over 15 hectolitres per hectare. What little fruit there was came in beautifully. Hand-picked and wild-fermented with 40 per cent whole bunches in open fermenters, the must was pumped over gently early on with foot treading throughout, then pressed after ten days to seasoned large-format French oak.

Concentrated for such a light frame, with red cherry, raspberry leaf, pepper and dried herbs over fine, sandy tannin. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Roast pork, duck, or a lentil and tomato stew. Slight chilling suits it in warm weather.
