Spinifex Moppa Shiraz 2019

Spinifex Moppa Shiraz is a single-vineyard Barossa Shiraz from a high site in the valley's north-west.

Three and a half acres in the north-west of the Barossa have been supplying Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro to this cellar since 2005. Nobody knows exactly how old the vines are, though at least eighty years is the estimate, and they have been farmed organically for forty of those by a grower who treats them with obvious respect. The first single-vineyard bottling came in 2015, when the season justified it. For 2019 two parcels were hand-picked and fermented with 30 per cent whole bunches in wood and steel for ten and eighteen days, then raised in 600- and 228-litre barrels, a fifth new.

Firing on all cylinders, with black fruit, spice and an earthy savoury edge over long, pliant tannin and real persistence. Serve at 17 degrees after a decant. Roast beef, lamb shoulder, or a mushroom and beef casserole.
