Spinifex Moppa Shiraz 2020

Spinifex Moppa Shiraz is an old-vine Shiraz from a single hillside vineyard in the north-west Barossa.

The grower here has managed his 3.5 acres organically for forty years and clearly knows every vine, which counts for a lot on a block thought to be at least eighty years old. Shiraz, Grenache and Mataro have all come off it for this cellar since 2005, and the first standalone bottling waited until 2015 and the right season. In 2020 two parcels were hand-picked and fermented with 30 per cent whole bunches, ten days in one vessel and eighteen in the other, across wood and steel, then raised in 600- and 228-litre barrels with 20 per cent new oak for twenty months.

Rich and deep with a little swagger, offering plum, blackberry, spice and cured meat, its structure and acidity keeping everything in place. Serve at 17 degrees. Slow-roasted lamb, beef ribs, or a hard aged cheese.
