Spinifex Old Vine Mataro 2012

Spinifex Old Vine Mataro is a Barossa Mataro from ninety-year-old vines at Light Pass.

Light Pass sits between Angaston and Nuriootpa, and the vines selected for this bottling were around ninety years old when it was made, which for Mataro means tiny crops and considerable density. Fermentation was natural and the wine stayed three weeks on skins, then spent sixteen months in old French oak before a period in stainless steel to freshen it up, a small step that makes a real difference with a variety this forceful. Worth distinguishing from the Old Vine Moculta single-vineyard releases of the same year, which are a different wine entirely.

Mouth-filling and spicy, with blackcurrant, ink and poppy seed over a powdery, savoury structure that has taken years to settle. The finish carries spice and earth, which is the mark of good old-vine Mataro. Serve at 17 degrees with slow-cooked beef, lamb shanks, or aged cheddar.
