Description
Spinifex Papillon is a Cinsault-led red blend from very old, dry-grown bush vines across the Barossa Valley.
Three ancient parcels carry the 2022. Most of the Cinsault comes from vines planted in 1910 at Ebenezer, rooted in deep, friable red clay, with a second Cinsault block of 40-year-old vines on Bethany sand. Grenache arrives from Vine Vale, where the vines date to around 1890 and sit in deep, coarse sand. Pete Schell fermented each parcel as whole berries and raised the wine in a mix of large old foudres and stainless steel, which keeps the fruit clear and the tannin loose. Schell was among the first Barossa growers to argue that depth and freshness are not a trade-off, and this blend is where he made the case.
Crunchy red berries, dried herb and a lick of earthy spice, with fine tannin and acid holding everything tight. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits lamb skewers, roast chicken with garlic, or a plate of charcuterie and pickles.
