Spinifex Riesling 2021

Spinifex Riesling is a dry white from old organically farmed vines in Eden Valley's Flaxman Valley.

The four-hectare Rostein vineyard was established in 1945 and bought by Pete Schell and Magali Gentric around five years before this vintage. It sits between 475 and 495 metres on lean, degraded granitic sand, roughly a third Riesling and two-thirds Shiraz. Two Riesling parcels grow here, one from 1945 and one from 1956, and this cuvée leans on the 1956 section. Yields are tiny for the variety, about 0.8 tonnes per acre. The 2021 harvest was chilled overnight, crushed, given two hours on skins and pressed; the press fraction fermented and aged six months in used 500-litre French oak while the rest stayed in tank. Four months on lees, partial malolactic, no yeast or acid added.

Lime, white flowers and a chalky, granitic undertow, with piercing acid and a little phenolic grip for texture. Serve cold, around 8 to 10 degrees. Try it with oysters, prawn cutlets or a plate of sashimi.
