Spinifex Riesling 2022

Spinifex Riesling is a dry Eden Valley white grown on granitic sand at altitude.

Bought in 2018, the Rostein vineyard covers four hectares established in 1945, dry-grown, between 475 and 495 metres on lean granitic sand. Two organically managed Riesling parcels give two separate wines: the 1945 vines go into the Rostein bottling, and the 1956 vines make this one. Yields run to roughly 0.8 tonnes per acre. In 2022 the fruit had two hours of skin contact before pressing, with the press wine fermented in used 500-litre French oak and the free-run going to tank. Both fractions had four months on lees, plus partial malolactic, ahead of blending. Pete Schell makes very little of it.

Intense and textural, with citrus blossom, lemon curd and a saline edge; the acid runs hard and long. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. Pair it with grilled whiting, chicken schnitzel and lemon, or a Thai green papaya salad.
