Spinifex Riesling 2024

Spinifex Riesling is a dry white from the 1956 Riesling block at Rostein in Eden Valley.

Altitude does the work here: the vineyard climbs from 475 to 495 metres in the Flaxman Valley, on lean, degraded granitic sand that gives the fruit its nervy line. The site was planted in 1945, is dry-grown and organically managed, and holds two Riesling parcels alongside a larger block of Shiraz. For 2024 the hand-picked fruit was crushed and pressed into an even split between stainless steel tank and seasoned 1000-litre foudre to ferment. Malolactic conversion was avoided to hold the crisp line, and the wine had only four months on lees before blending. Production is small and always has been.

Bright and direct: lemon zest, green apple skin, crushed stone. The finish is dry and long. Drink it well chilled at 8 degrees, with fish tacos, a goat's cheese salad or fresh spanner crab.
