Spinifex Syrah 2021

Spinifex Syrah is a mid-weight Barossa red drawn from higher, cooler sites across the Barossa and Eden valleys.

Ten separate plots go into this wine, chosen by Pete Schell for elevation and coolness so that picking can happen earlier and the fruit keeps its red-fruited lift. Vine age spans 25 to 100 years. Schell varies his approach parcel by parcel, using whole bunches, whole berries and destemmed fruit in different proportions, and aims for soft extraction, so the ferments are left largely alone. Macerations are short, and fermentation happens across stainless steel, concrete and mostly large seasoned oak, with a single new barrel in the mix. The 2021 season delivered even ripening and good natural acidity.

Broody dark fruit at first, then the acid lifts and the wine turns energetic and spicy, with fine sinewy tannins. Serve at 16 degrees. It goes with a rare steak, roast lamb with anchovy, or grilled sausages and lentils.
