Spinifex Syrah 2022

Spinifex Syrah is a Barossa red built for perfume and freshness instead of weight.

Where the Bête Noir bottling goes dark and broad, this is the lighter-footed half of the pair. Fruit is drawn from up to 10 plots scattered through the Barossa and Eden valleys, all on the higher and cooler end of the spectrum, with vine age from 25 to 100 years. Whole bunches made up 30 per cent of the 2022 ferment, the rest going in as berries. Extraction was kept gentle, the ferments barely worked, and macerations were short. Stainless steel, concrete and mostly large seasoned oak carried the wine for eight months. Pete Schell's line on the Barossa is that overdoing it is easier than underdoing it.

Dark fruit, spice, earth and a savoury meaty streak, framed by fresh acid and fine sinewy tannin. Deep but elegant. Serve at 16 degrees. Try it with beef ribs, mushroom pasta or a plate of merguez off the grill.
