Spinifex Tempranillo 2021

Spinifex Tempranillo is a single-vineyard Barossa red from the high ground at Rowland Flat.

Tempranillo has been part of the picture since 2006, but only from 2018 has the wine come entirely from one small site, partway up the hill towards the Steingarten Riesling vineyard at Rowland Flat. The block sits immediately beside a patch of bush-vine Mataro that Spinifex has used in its rosé for years, and Pete Schell got to know the Tempranillo by tasting it each time he checked on the Mataro next door. Eventually he approached the growers. He calls the wine an indulgence. What he likes is the way fruit grown on red clay over limestone develops flavour early while keeping its acid.

Blue and black fruit, dried spice and a firm earthy grip; medium-bodied, with tannin that has some grain to it. Serve at 16 degrees. Chorizo and white beans, grilled lamb, or a paella with rabbit would all suit.
