Spinifex Tempranillo 2022

Spinifex Tempranillo is a Barossa red from a single high-lying block at Rowland Flat.

Red clay over limestone is the reason this site earns its own bottling: it gives fruit that builds flavour early while holding acid, which is what Pete Schell was after when he approached the growers. The block lies partway up the hill towards Steingarten, beside a bush-vine Mataro parcel that feeds the Spinifex rosé. Hand-picked early in the season to keep the fruit lively, bunches went through the destemmer in full and fermented in one small open vessel, then matured in large seasoned French and American oak hogsheads. Tempranillo has been in the mix since 2006, and this is where it has landed.

Inky blue fruit, exotic spice and an earthy edge, with tight tannin, silky weight and a driven finish. Serve at 16 degrees. It likes grilled lamb chops, jamón croquettes or a smoky pork and pepper stew.
