Swinney Farvie Grenache 2023

Swinney Farvie Grenache is a single-block bush-vine Grenache from Frankland River, bottled without any Mourvèdre in this release.

The deeper gravel and thinner clay partway down the 2004 block on the estate's upper northeast crest is what marks out the Farvie ground, and Rob Mann can point to where it starts. Fruit from there runs more ferrous and mineral, with fine velvety tannin and unusual complexity. Vines are worked over in several passes, with only the bunches sheltered in dappled light set aside, then berry sorted and gravity-fed to French oak for natural fermentation with 30 per cent bunches. Loose bunches and small berries in 2023 concentrated colour and flavour enough that no Mourvèdre was needed. Eleven days on skins, then 10 months in large, fine-grained seasoned French oak.

The colour is a startling deep purple for Grenache, and the wine follows: dark cherry, iron, pepper and crushed stone, with sinewy tannin. Serve at 16 degrees, decanted. Match it with barbecued lamb, beef short ribs or a rich mushroom ragù.
