Swinney Farvie Syrah 2020

Swinney Farvie Syrah is a top-selection Syrah from the Powderbark and Wilsons Pool vineyards in Frankland River.

Two previous vintages came solely from Powderbark; the 2020 brings in a third of its fruit from Wilsons Pool, which fills the palate out a little. Only a selected patch of soil in each block is set aside for this selection. Clones include Jack Mann's heritage massale material, named for winemaker Rob Mann's grandfather. Trellising sets the Syrah apart from the bush-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre, and shade cloth on the western side softens the afternoon light and cools the bunch zone. Sorted berry by berry, with 67 per cent whole bunches, the lot went by gravity into one French oak vat plus a pair of demi-muids to ferment wild, then basket-pressed after 11 days on skins.

Peppery and floral, with blue fruit, smoked meat and graphite, and tannin that is chalky and long. Power without weight. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with grilled beef, lamb ribs or roast eggplant with tahini.
