Swinney Farvie Syrah 2021

Swinney Farvie Syrah is a Frankland River Syrah drawn only from massale-planted parcels.

What separates this from the standard estate Syrah is the plant material: where that wine draws on a range of clones and selections, these parcels are planted entirely to massale vines, including Jack Mann's Houghton selection, Jack Mann being winemaker Rob Mann's grandfather. Only a selected area of soil within the Wilson's Pool and Powderbark blocks qualifies. The Syrah is trellised, unlike the bush-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre, and shade cloth on the western flank protects the skins and drops the temperature around the bunches, which shows up as darker colour, lower alcohol and more perfume. Picked on 24 and 30 March and sorted berry by berry, the 2021 fermented with 58 per cent whole bunches.

Ethereal is the word: violets, white pepper, blue fruit and a fine, almost weightless structure that still carries flavour a long way. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Try it with roast venison, duck, or mushrooms and polenta.
