Swinney Farvie Syrah 2023

Swinney Farvie Syrah is a cool-season Frankland River Syrah from Jack Mann's heritage selection.

The 2023 came off a parcel planted entirely to Jack Mann's heritage mass-selection Syrah, Jack Mann being the grandfather of winemaker Rob Mann, and the cooler conditions left a distinct Szechuan pepper note and a spicy, Cornas-like structure. Berries were sorted individually in the winery, and the whole-bunch share was held to 55 per cent, well down on the 65 per cent of warmer years, to keep the texture light while still lifting the aromatics. Everything went by gravity into a French oak vat plus demi-muids, where wild yeast took over, then 15 days on skins and 10 months in large seasoned French oak. No new wood, as always.

Szechuan pepper, dried flowers, cranberry and dark plum, with a sappy, mineral spine and tannin that grips gently. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. It suits roast duck, peppered steak or a lentil and mushroom braise.
