Swinney Grenache 2022

Swinney Grenache is a Frankland River Grenache fermented and raised in large-format French oak.

Rob Mann had been waiting years for a crop big enough to run what he calls a proper large-oak fermentation, and 2022 delivered it. Hand-picked from well-established, dry-grown bush vines on the rich gravel and loam of the Wilsons Pool vineyard, each vine was worked over several times so only faultless fruit came in. In the cellar the bunches were destemmed and sorted berry by berry, then fermented with 15 per cent whole bunches across small wooden fermenters and stainless steel tanks. A fortnight on skins was followed by pressing to a 3600-litre seasoned French vat for 11 months. The scale of the vessel keeps the fruit lucid.

Darker-fruited than you might expect from Grenache, with pepper, dried flowers and the estate's signature sinewy structure. Serve at 16 degrees. Pair it with barbecued lamb, a beef and olive braise or roast pumpkin and feta.
