Swinney Grenache 2024

Swinney Grenache is a Frankland River Grenache from dry-grown bush vines, made with a high whole-bunch component.

Erin Larkin has called this an important wine not just for the vineyard but for the Great Southern and for Australia, and Max Allen has noted that it tastes like no other Australian example of the variety. The fruit is picked by hand each year off well-established, dry-grown bush vines on the gravelly loam of the Wilsons Pool vineyard, with vines passed over multiple times to take only perfectly ripe bunches. Destemming and berry sorting follow. For 2024 Rob Mann went to 40 per cent whole bunches, fermenting across small wooden vessels and stainless steel, then a fortnight on skins and 11 months in a 3600-litre seasoned French vat.

Sitting firmly in the red-fruited register, with raspberry, redcurrant and dried thyme, plus stem spice, bright natural acid and the fine gritty tannin that marks this site. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, with roast chicken, lamb skewers or lentils and goat's cheese.
