Description
Swinney Mourvèdre is the estate's first straight bottling of the variety, from bush vines in Frankland River.
For a few years this fruit was being folded into a Mourvèdre Syrah Grenache blend, and Rob Mann found it increasingly hard to justify diluting it. The vines grow on the rich gravel and loam of the Wilsons Pool vineyard, planted in the early 2000s, dry-grown, farmed on organic principles and picked over multiple passes for exact ripeness. The 2021 was hand-picked across two days, berry sorted and gravity-fed into a single stainless steel fermenter, with a judged 22 per cent whole bunch to draw out what Mann calls the distinctive ferrous quality, fine structure and wild spice of the variety. Eleven days on skins, then 11 months on lees in large-format French oak.
Perfumed and lifted, with dark berry, bouquet garni and earthy spice; the palate is precise and plump at once, silky fruit against elegant tannin. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits lamb shoulder, duck ragù or grilled mushrooms.
