Description
Swinney Mourvèdre is a Frankland River red with small supporting parts of Syrah and Grenache.
Syrah at six per cent and Grenache at four reappear in 2022, but only in support, because this is still Mourvèdre's wine. The vines sit on the rich gravel and loam of the Wilsons Pool vineyard, planted in the early 2000s and dry-grown. Fruit was hand-picked over two days for flavour and tannin ripeness, berry sorted, and moved by gravity into a single stainless steel fermenter with 20 per cent whole bunch. Rob Mann finds a real synergy between a cool region and a warm season with this variety, and he picked earlier than the year before to hold freshness. Eleven days on skins, then 11 months in fine-grained large-format French oak.
White pepper, wild herb and savoury depth over a textural, mid-weight palate, and this is the wine that most clearly shows the site's rusty-nail character. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with braised lamb, sausages and lentils, or roast eggplant.
