Swinney Mourvedre Rosé 2022

Swinney Mourvèdre Rosé is a dry, savoury rosé built on bush-vine Mourvèdre from Frankland River.

The fruit comes off bush vines, dry-grown, on the Powderbark vineyard's ironstone gravel hilltop, picked for freshness at a potential alcohol of 12.5 to 13 per cent, just short of full maturity. Pressing followed a traditional ultra-light Champagne cycle, with a small share of bush-vine Grenache and a splash of Vermentino added for complexity and to reinforce the acid line. Three months on lees in neutral French oak gave the wine its texture before bottling. This was the inaugural release, and it set the pattern for what has become one of the more talked-about rosés in the country.

Pale copper, thoroughly dry, with strawberry, rosewater, wet stone and a saline grip. There is more substance here than the colour suggests. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees, in a wine glass. Good with grilled fish, roast chicken or a bowl of aioli and vegetables.
