Swinney Riesling 2022

Swinney Riesling is a textural dry Riesling from two old blocks in the Powderbark vineyard.

Two of the estate's oldest Riesling blocks supply hand-selected fruit, and the vineyard work is unusual: shade cloth shields the grapes from the afternoon sun, and bunch selection removes anything that has caught too much of it. In the cellar the approach is just as atypical for Australian Riesling, with whole-bunch pressing, only light settling, then natural fermentation on high solids in tank, where the ferment temperature is allowed to climb as high as 20 degrees. That only works with very good fruit, and here it builds genuine texture and a quiet complexity behind the fruit.

Lime and white flower with a savoury, saline undercurrent and a broader mid-palate than most Australian Riesling gives you. Dry, long, textural. Serve at 9 to 10 degrees. Match it with sashimi, a Vietnamese chicken salad or grilled king prawns.
