Swinney Riesling 2023

Swinney Riesling is a dry Frankland River Riesling made from organically farmed, dry-grown vines.

Two things explain this wine. The first is the farming: all blocks organic and dry-farmed, cane-pruned, rows running north to south, with shade cloth over the Riesling to stop the bunches roasting. The second is the cellar, where Rob Mann pursues structure and texture over austerity. Fruit from two of the oldest Powderbark blocks is pressed as whole bunches and fermented on indigenous yeast in stainless steel with a high solids component, which he says builds nuance and a saline core. Conditions in 2023 were cool and dry with no heat spikes; yields came in below average, which concentrated clarity, freshness and acid.

Piercing lime and grapefruit with a chalky, saline centre and an acid line that goes on and on. Bone dry. Serve at 9 degrees, with oysters, fish and chips, or a green papaya salad.
