Swinney Syrah 2019

Swinney Syrah is a Frankland River Shiraz drawn from five small trellised parcels.

Five parcels went into the 2019, planted to a range of material including Jack Mann's heritage massale selection and two more recent Rhône clones the Swinneys have introduced. Unlike the estate's bush-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre, the Syrah is trellised, though single-stake plantings are planned. Fruit was hand-harvested and sorted, then gravity-fed to small wooden and stainless steel fermenters, with six per cent Grenache and a trace of Mourvèdre going in for complexity. Natural fermentation ran with 18 per cent whole bunches, and after a fortnight on skins the wine was pressed straight into large-format, fine-grained French oak, 19 per cent of it new, for 11 months. Bottled unfined and minimally filtered.

Peppery and floral, with blue fruit, smoked meat and chalky tannin, the fruit pulled tight by acid. Serve at 16 degrees. Match it with lamb cutlets, a peppered steak or roast beetroot and lentils.
