Swinney Syrah 2020

Swinney Syrah is a trellised Frankland River Shiraz from a range of clones and selections.

Clone 470, Waldron material and Jack Mann's heritage massale selection all contribute in 2020, each bringing a different bunch structure to the ferment. The Syrah is trellised here, in contrast with the bush-vine Grenache and Mourvèdre, with single-stake plantings still on the to-do list. In the winery the berries were sorted and emptied by gravity into small wooden and stainless steel fermenters, with a barely noticeable 31 per cent whole bunch component included to build structure. Two weeks on skins, then pressing directly to fine-grained 600-litre demi-muids, 13 per cent of them new, for 11 months.

Blue and black fruit with cracked pepper, olive and a graphite streak; medium-bodied, with tannin that has some sinew. Serve at 16 degrees. Good with grilled lamb, a mushroom and thyme pie or roast duck.
