Swinney Syrah 2022

Swinney Syrah is a Frankland River Shiraz made with a well-integrated whole-bunch component.

Whole bunches have crept up steadily in these reds over the years, and nowhere more than in the Syrah, where Rob Mann finds they heighten the freshness, spice and structure he is chasing. The 2022 was hand-harvested from selected trellised parcels planted to clone 470, Waldron and Jack Mann's heritage mass selection. In a warmer season the estate's shade cloth did real work, protecting the skins, cooling the bunch zone and holding onto regional and varietal character. Berries were sorted and gravity-fed into small wooden and stainless steel fermenters with 28 per cent whole bunch, then 12 days on skins and 11 months in 600-litre demi-muids, seven per cent new.

Spicy and savoury, with dark plum, black olive, pepper and a robust frame under lustrous fruit. Serve at 16 degrees. It handles a charred rib eye, lamb shoulder with olives, or grilled mushrooms and polenta.
