Thomas Wines Braemore Semillon 2023

Thomas Wines Braemore Semillon is a single-vineyard Hunter Valley Semillon from vines planted in 1969.

The vineyard lies on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road, Pokolbin, in what locals call the Hunter Semillon dress circle, a two-kilometre strip of ground shared by about twelve growers, Tyrrell's among them. It was an ancient sea floor once, and the deep sandy loam drains freely, letting roots go down a long way, which suits the variety exactly. Andrew Thomas puts the site's famous longevity down to the extra intensity and concentration that Semillon gets on this soil. The blocks were hand-picked in mid-February, each batch hand-sorted so only the best fruit was pressed as whole bunches to limit phenolics, then five weeks on lees before bottling.

Star-bright and taut, with lemon, preserved citrus, white flowers and a mineral line, crackling with energy through a long finish. There is plenty to enjoy now and much more to come. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees, with fresh oysters, whiting or a prawn and avocado salad.
