Thomas Wines Braemore Semillon 2024

Thomas Wines Braemore Semillon is a dry Hunter Valley Semillon from a single 1969 vineyard at Pokolbin.

Free-draining sandy loam over an ancient sea floor is what makes this patch of Hermitage Road so valuable: roots dig deep, and the wines that come off it last for decades. About twelve producers share the two-kilometre strip, Tyrrell's included, and Andrew Thomas has long argued that the longevity here comes down to the intensity and concentration Semillon finds in this soil. The 2024 blocks were hand-picked in February and each batch hand-sorted, so that only the best bunches went to press, whole-bunch, to keep phenolics low. A few weeks on lees followed before bottling, with no oak and nothing to get between the fruit and the glass.

Pristine and pure from the first sniff: lemon, lime blossom and a mouthwatering mineral line, layered and energetic. Serve it cold, 8 to 10 degrees, and give it a decent glass. Good with oysters, sushi or grilled flathead.
