Thomas Wines Cellar Reserve Braemore Semillon 2018

Thomas Wines Cellar Reserve Braemore Semillon is an aged-release Hunter Semillon from the 1969 Braemore vineyard.

Six years in bottle is the whole idea. Andrew Thomas set up the Cellar Release programme in 2001, holding back a small portion of each vintage so drinkers get the wine at the point where development starts to show. His own image for it is a spring slowly unwinding, giving up light toast and hay characters, with the best years carrying on for 15 or more. The site is on the sandy alluvial flats of Hermitage Road at Pokolbin, an ancient sea floor, now deep free-draining loam that lets the roots dig deep, and it is that soil the longevity comes back to.

Early in its journey and on the money right now: lemon curd, toast, hay and a saline, smoky edge, with rounded acid holding the line. Serve at 10 degrees. Good with grilled fish, chicken and lemon, or a wedge of aged Gruyère.
