Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz 2021

Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz is a two-vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz aged in French hogsheads.

An even split of Kiss and Sweetwater fruit makes up the 2021. Sweetwater sits up on Sweetwater Ridge, in northern Belford at the lower Hunter's edge, planted in 1998 on red-brown loam over limestone, which gives its wines a distinct floral lift. Both components spent 15 months in French hogsheads of one, two and three years plus some new before Andrew Thomas made the blend. The label began in 2011 when barrels that did not suit the Kiss Shiraz were combined with Sweetwater material, and it has kept that character ever since: barrel selection first, vineyard composition varying by season, the style constant.

Deep, floral and spice-scented, sitting at the fuller end of medium-bodied, with a silky texture, bold flavour and impressive length. It will evolve for years. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Decant it and pour alongside a rich braise or roast lamb.
