Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz 2022

Thomas Wines Elenay Shiraz is a Hunter Valley Shiraz blended from the Ridgeview and Kiss vineyards.

Ridgeview makes up 60 per cent of the 2022, with the balance from the flagship Kiss vines. Andrew Thomas has worked with the Ridgeview site at Belford since 2017; the vines went in during 1998, rooted deep in the red-brown loam over limestone that marks Belford out, and face east so the hot afternoon sun misses them, which brings a perfumed lift. The Kiss vines at Pokolbin Estate sit just across the road from Graveyard, one of the Hunter's most famous vineyards, and these 1969 plantings crop meagrely. Both components spent 14 months in new, one, two and three-year-old French hogsheads before blending.

Seductive fruit with earth and spice behind it: dark berry, clove, dried herb and a supple, savoury palate framed by good oak. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Try it with roast duck, braised beef with mushrooms or a well-aged cheddar.
