Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz 2017

Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz is a single-vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz released with extra bottle age.

Pokolbin Estate was planted in 1969 on the Hunter's classic clay and loam, and the low-yielding old vines there give this bottling its concentration. Fruit came off by hand in the middle of February, sat cold on skins for 48 hours before fermentation, then spent nine days on skins in total. Sixteen months in French hogsheads followed. This particular bottle is a museum release from Andrew Thomas's own cellar, held back four extra years, which puts it at the front of the window where Hunter Shiraz starts to give something back. The label has been his most recognised red since 2001.

Deep purple still, with concentrated dark fruit, savoury spice and long satiny tannin, fuller than medium but a long way from heavy. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees. Lamb shoulder, duck or a mushroom risotto will all work alongside it.
