Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz is the flagship single-vineyard Shiraz from this Hunter Valley producer.

Across the road from Brokenwood's Graveyard Vineyard sits Pokolbin Estate, planted in 1969, and fruit from those old clay-loam rows has filled this bottle since 2001. The 2021 was hand-picked on 22 February, cold-soaked for two days, then fermented on skins for nine before going to French hogsheads for sixteen months. Andrew Thomas is firm that a flagship need not be the biggest wine in a range, and this is his proof: medium-weighted, tightly wound, with the coiled-spring quality he talks about in his best Semillon and Shiraz. Cool and wet, 2021 asked a great deal of Hunter growers.

Dark fruit, sweet spice, red floral lift and a wisp of smoke; the palate is velvety through the middle and youthfully structured. Decant and serve at 16 degrees. Roast lamb, beef cheeks or aged cheddar suit it, and a decade in the cellar will suit it better.
