Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz 2022

Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz is a medium-bodied Hunter Valley Shiraz from one old vineyard at Pokolbin.

Cool and wet again in 2022, and the answer in these rows was ruthlessness: more than a third of the crop was dropped after veraison, taking yields down to 28 hectolitres per hectare. Andrew Thomas has had three decades in the Hunter to learn when to do that. The fruit, off 1969 vines on clay-loam at Pokolbin Estate, was picked late in February and fermented on skins for eight days before pressing to French hogsheads, a fifth of them new, for sixteen months. Ten more months in bottle followed. Thomas calls this the introvert to Sweetwater's extrovert.

Restrained on the nose and medium-bodied in the mouth, with dark plum, earth and fine-grained tannin carrying a long finish. Serve at 16 degrees after half an hour open. Good with slow-cooked beef, roast quail or a plate of charcuterie.
