Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz 2023

Thomas Wines Kiss Shiraz is a single-vineyard Shiraz grown on old vines in Pokolbin.

After two cooler, wetter seasons the Hunter got warmth and dry weather back in 2023, and these old Pokolbin Estate rows were the first Shiraz Andrew Thomas picked, by hand on 18 February. A 24-hour cold soak preceded a nine-day ferment on skins; maturation ran sixteen months in French hogsheads, one in five of them new and the rest one and two years old, then eleven months in bottle before release. The vines date to 1969 and sit on the clay-loam that defines Hunter Shiraz. Thomas describes this as the introvert of his reds, a comment on volume, not depth.

Blue and black fruit with pepper, earth and a floral lift; the tannins are fine and the finish long. Sixteen degrees, and give it air. Match with lamb cutlets, grilled kangaroo or a mushroom and thyme pie.
