Thomas Wines Sweetwater Ridge Shiraz 2022

Thomas Wines Sweetwater Ridge Shiraz is a single-vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz from a steep block in Belford.

The name change tells a story. This label once drew on a vineyard Andrew Thomas made famous and then lost access to when the property sold, and from 2017 he began buying instead from Ridgeview Estate next door, a family-run site whose fruit he rates for its floral complexity among red and blue berries. That fruit filled a mailing-list bottling until 2022, when it graduated here. The block is in Belford, planted in 1998, deep-rooted in red-brown loam over limestone, and its steep east-facing aspect keeps the afternoon heat off. Picked mid-February, fermented as whole berries, then thirteen months in French hogsheads of mixed age.

Red and blue fruit with floral top notes, pepper and a supple, silky palate that finishes long. Serve at 16 degrees. Lamb skewers, pork belly or a tomato-heavy pasta will all sit happily beside it.
