Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz 2018

Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz is a single-vineyard Hunter Valley Shiraz from the Belford subregion.

Red-brown loam over limestone in the northern end of the Lower Hunter, planted in 1998: that combination is what gives this label its floral lift, and it is why the vineyard earned the reputation it has. Andrew Thomas reserves only the best barrels for this bottling, and what does not make the cut finds its way into his Synergy and Two of a Kind wines, which is part of why those punch above their price. The 2018 was fermented with a tenth whole bunches and raised sixteen months in French hogsheads, a fifth of them new. That season is remembered fondly in the Hunter.

Dark plum and blue fruit with the site's violet perfume, medium-bodied, tannins fine and settled with age. Serve at 16 degrees. Roast lamb, braised beef short ribs or a wedge of aged gouda all work well.
