Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz 2020

Thomas Wines Sweetwater Shiraz is a medium-bodied Shiraz from one celebrated Lower Hunter vineyard.

Hunter Shiraz at its best is closer to Burgundy than to Barossa, perfumed and supple and medium-weighted, and this vineyard in the northern Lower Hunter is one of the reasons people still say so. The vines went in during 1998 on red-brown loam sitting over limestone, and the floral character that comes off them is consistent year to year. A tenth whole bunches went into the 2020 ferment, and the wine was raised in French hogsheads with twenty per cent new oak. Only the barrels Andrew Thomas judges best carry this label; the rest are folded into his cheaper bottlings.

Perfume first, violets and spice, then red and dark berries, supple tannin and a fresh close. Serve it lightly cool, around 15 to 16 degrees. Roast pork, char siu or grilled eggplant with tahini are all good company.
