Toolangi Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

Toolangi Vineyard Chardonnay is a Yarra Valley Chardonnay from one low-yielding vineyard at Dixons Creek.

Poor flowering in 2022 cut yields to the smallest in a decade at this property, and the compensation came in quality. Picking was a single pass on 4 March; the bunches were pressed whole straight to French barriques and puncheons with ten per cent new oak, and the wine rested ten months before bottling. The vineyard, planted in 1995 alongside the Toolangi State Forest, carries Gingin, Mendoza and I10V3 on fine clay loam and crops modestly even in generous years. Kaspar Hermann's approach is to let the season decide the shape of the wine.

Layered and concentrated, citrus and stone fruit with a fine chalky line and real length. Twelve degrees. Try it with roast chicken, scallops or a mushroom and leek tart, and give it a decent glass.
