Toolangi Vineyard D Block Shiraz 2019

Toolangi Vineyard D Block Shiraz is a single-block Yarra Valley Syrah from Dixons Creek.

This was the first D Block bottling, drawn from a parcel of twenty-four-year-old vines on silty clay loam. The clone is PT23, an old Australian selection traced back to descendants of the 1832 Busby cuttings, grafted onto Paulsen rootstock. The whole crop went into the ferment as bunches, spent three weeks on skins and was pressed to French hogsheads for ten months. Shiraz here spent years in the shadow of the Pinot and Chardonnay, but the picking and the winemaking have both been reset around freshness, and the Yarra has always been able to grow Syrah of this kind.

Spicy and powdery, with sappy dark berries, pepper and real finesse, closer to the northern Rhone than to Barossa. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Lamb with rosemary, duck or roast beetroot and lentils; it will improve for five to ten years.
