Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2023

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay is an I10V3 clone Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley, made without malolactic conversion.

All I10V3, all planted in 1995, all from twenty rows within D Block: the parcel is as narrowly defined as it sounds. Picking fell on 29 March, a full month later than the previous release of this wine, after a cool 2023 left bunches small and intensely flavoured. The fruit was destemmed and pressed to French oak, a fifth of it new, for fermentation and nine months in barrel. Kaspar Hermann keeps malolactic conversion away from this cuvee, finding the I10V3 clone arrives with acid and flavour already in balance.

Aromatic, rich and weighty, with zesty acid cut, pure fruit, sweet spice and a saline flick at the end. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Good with roast chicken, lobster or a bowl of mussels in cream; it can take rich food.
