Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay 2024

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Chardonnay is a barrel-fermented Yarra Valley Chardonnay from twenty rows planted in 1995.

A mild, uneventful spring in 2024 put better fruit set on the vines after a couple of lean years, and the harvest period stayed warm and even. Picking happened on 2 March, three weeks ahead of the cooler previous season. The grapes were crushed and destemmed, then pressed into French oak with twenty per cent new barrels, and matured nine months on lees. Malolactic conversion is left out, as it always is with this parcel, because the I10V3 clone planted in 1995 comes in with acid and flavour already balanced. Twenty rows in D Block, on fine clay loam, up against the state forest.

Pure citrus and stone fruit with zesty acidity, delicate spice and a salty edge on a long close. Twelve degrees. Serve with roast chicken, prawn linguine or a plate of manchego; there is enough structure to hold five years or more.
