Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Pinot Noir 2020

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Pinot Noir is a single-parcel Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from E Block.

The MV6 vines here went in during 2001 on E Block, and this particular parcel yields below the average for a property that already crops lightly, so there is more drive in the glass. Three-quarters of the crop was destemmed to whole berries with the remaining quarter left as bunches, and fermentation started spontaneously in open-topped wooden vats. Twenty-one days on skins, then nine months in French oak with fifteen per cent new, and bottling without fining or filtration. Dixons Creek is cool, and the forest boundary keeps it cooler still through the nights.

Red cherry, plum and a savoury earthiness, light on its feet with fine powdery tannin. Serve at 14 degrees. Roast duck, pork belly or mushrooms with garlic; a wide glass is worth the trouble with this one.
