Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Shiraz 2019

Toolangi Vineyard Pauls Lane Shiraz is a single-parcel Yarra Valley Syrah from D Block.

Rows 11 to 23 of D Block supply this, off vines coming up to their twentieth vintage and cropped deliberately low. Compared with the estate Shiraz there is more whole bunch in the ferment, forty per cent, and a touch more new oak at fifteen per cent; otherwise the handling is identical, with a natural ferment, plunging as needed, ten months in barrel and bottling without fining or filtration. Yarra Shiraz was medium-weighted and perfumed long before the fashion came back around, and the picking and winemaking here have both been reoriented around freshness.

Medium-weighted and peppery, with dark berry, dried herb and a fine sinewy tannin line. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees. Lamb with rosemary, sausages with lentils or a mushroom and thyme pie; it reads more Rhone than Barossa.
