Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

Toolangi Vineyard Pinot Noir is a single-vineyard Pinot Noir from a low-cropping Dixons Creek site.

Kaspar Hermann's fifth harvest at the property brought the smallest crop in a decade after poor flowering, and small yields tend to make good wine, as 2022 bore out across the Yarra. Fruit off vines past twenty years of age was handpicked on 11 March, mostly destemmed, cold-soaked and then fermented twenty-one days on skins. Pressing went to French barriques and puncheons with under ten per cent new oak for malolactic conversion, followed by ten months on lees in barrel. Hermann's method is to let site and season set the style, not to chase one.

Cherry and cranberry with a spicy, earthy undertow, fine tannin and a long, fresh finish. Fourteen degrees is the mark, and a wide glass helps. Duck, roast pork or mushroom pasta; it drinks well now and will keep five years without fuss.
